Atheist: "I can be good without God. Do you really need a holy book to tell you murder is wrong?"
Answer: Atheists love to prove themselves (to be moral) with moral statements like: “I do unto others what I want done to me because I don’t want to be a hypocrite”—actual quote from an atheist I debated.
The question is, “why don’t you want to be a hypocrite?" What is wrong or evil about being a hypocrite in your worldview? Once again, this demonstrates the truth of the puzzle images of the different worldviews. Something inside the atheist says “being a hypocrite is not good” so he tries not to be a hypocrite. But what point of reference does the atheist have to connect what he intuitively knows (hypocrisy is bad)? NOTHING! Atheists have no point of reference that makes sense of their experiences. They have connected some middle pieces of this puzzle together (hypocrisy is bad), but all the other pieces around are not put together and so their worldview is all jacked up! Maybe it’s because they believe in Karma like many agnostics I know. Once again, what point of reference (what BIG pieces of the puzzle that are put together) do they have to justify any belief in Karma? This is why their worldview failed the truth test of experiential relevance.
Francis Schaeffer explained the shape-shifting inconsistencies of what atheists say they believe vs how atheists actually live: “Modern man resides in a two-story universe. In the lower story is the finite world without God; here life is absurd, as we have seen. In the upper story are meaning, value, and purpose. Now modern man lives in the lower story because he believes there is no God. But he cannot live happily in such an absurd world; therefore, he continually makes leaps of faith into the upper story to affirm meaning, value, and purpose, even though he has no right to, since he does not believe in God. Modern man is totally inconsistent when he makes this leap, because these values cannot exist without God, and man in his lower story does not have God."
